RENTAL REQUIREMENTS & RULES
What do I need to rent a boat?
You need boating experience! You will also need a valid driver's license or photo id and major credit card.
If you were born AFTER January 01, 1988 (that means you were born between 1988 & this year) you are also required to have Florida Boater's Safety card or have completed a NASBLA approved boat safe course. If you were born BEFORE the year 1988, a boaters certificate is NOT required.
Do I need a boating license to rent a boat in Florida?
Florida law requires proof of completion of a NASBLA approved boat safety course to operate any motor boat or personal watercraft (PWC's include wave runners and jet skis) if you were born on or after January 01, 1988.
We recommend all boaters take a FL Boaters Safety Course before renting or operating any boat regardless of age.
More information is available through Florida Fish and Wildlife at http://www.myfwc.com. A temporary Boater Safety Test is available online. The link is on our home page. The study material & test take about 30 minutes to complete and the certificate is valid for 90 days.
You will need to complete the temporary test before your arrival.
Are there any age restrictions?
Boat Rentals:
Boat renters must be at least 23 years old and provide proof of age and, if required, a Boater's Safety Card to rent a boat. Passengers must be a minimum of 6 months old and/or weigh no less than 18 pounds.
The U.S. Coast Guard does not recommend taking infants weighing less than 18lbs onboard a recreational boat. PFDs currently available may not provide a proper fit or perform as expected for infants weighing less than 18lbs. Also, infants must be held while aboard the boat and never strapped into a carrier or car seat.
JETSKI RENTALS:
ALL OPERATORS, REGARDLESS OF AGE, MUST HAVE VALID PHOTO ID WITH PROOF OF AGE WITH THEM TO OPERATE ANY BOAT RENTAL OR PWC.
Born on or before December 31, 1987 (You were born between 1900 and 1987)
Participants are allowed to operate Waverunners alone or with a passenger, and possession of a Boater Safety Card is not required. Individuals are also authorized to sign the rental agreement.
Born on or after January 1, 1988 (You were born between 1988 and this year)
Participants must hold a Boater Safety Card to operate.
Operators must be at least 18 years old to carry a passenger. If individuals do not possess a Boater Safety Card, a temporary Boater Safety Certificate Test is available at our office for $3.00 or online. Renters must be 18 to sign the rental agreement. Participants under 18 years old must have a parent or guardian present to sign the rental agreement and liability release.
15 Years of Age and Under
Participants are NOT allowed to operate a jetski, even if they hold a Boater Safety I.D. Card ( Florida law, Chapter 327.393). Florida laws require proof of age with photo identification. Anyone caught allowing an under age rider to operate will be told to return to shore and no refund will be given.
Do my kids need to wear a life jacket & do you provide life jackets?
Yes, we provide USCG approved life jackets for all ages of people. We do not provide animal life jackets. See below to see who is required to wear a life jacket.
Boat Rentals: Children aged 7 and under must wear a life vest at all times on a rental boat. We do supply life vests for all passengers. It is recommended that all boaters wear life vests.
Waverunners: Riders are required to wear a life vest at all times regardless of age.
Can we pick up additional passengers at another location or dock?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! All passengers must load at our dock AND must sign the liability release before getting on the rental boat.
If you are caught loading passengers at another location, or you are caught with anyone on board who has not signed the liability release, you will be instructed to return to the dock immediately and no refund will be given!
Can we fish from the boat?
Yes. You may fish from our rental boats. Center console boats are set up with a live well and are good fishing boats. The deck boats do not have a live well and have fixed tops that limit where from the boat you can fish. Please do not stand on the seats to fish. It is the customers responsibility to obtain a saltwater fishing license and to know and understand all local fishing regulations. You can purchase a fishing license and learn local regulations at http://www.myfwc.com
Can we ski or tube on the rental boats?
No. Our insurance does not cover pull behinds or towing of any kind.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes. Dogs must be leashed at all times while on 'Tween Waters property. You might also want to check Lee County regulations regarding pets and beach access. The renter is responsible for the pet and must clean up after them. The renter is also responsible for any damages to the boat, injuries others, or damage to other's property caused by the pet.
NAVIGATION & COMMUNICATION
Do you provide a chart of where we can go? Do the boats have GPS?
We provide a chart for our customers and will instruct you on where to go and how to read the chart. The channels are well marked and the waters inside our allowed run area are not difficult to navigate. However, it is ultimately the customers responsibility to understand how to navigate and operate the boat. The rental boats do not have GPS so ask as many questions as needed so that you are comfortable and fully understand our instructions before heading out.
Where can we go with the boat?
We allow our boats to visit Cabbage Key, Cayo Costa, and North Captiva. The limits are the North end of Cayo Costa (1 hour to our north) Boats are not allowed east of the Inter-Coastal waterway. We do not allow boats in the Gulf of Mexico. We DO NOT allow boats to go to Pine Island or Boca Grande.
What happens if we run aground?
If you follow the chart and instructions you should not have any problems. But, just in case, all motors are equipped with power trim & tilt. Also, every boat has a paddle on board.
A $100.00 GROUNDING FEE applies to ANY GROUNDING of the boat.
A $150.00 plus $150.00 per hour rescue fee plus fuel expense applies if we have to come and get or assist you.
If the boat cannot be retrieved until a later time or the following day because of tides, time of day, or any other reason ADDITIONAL FEES APLLY. BE AWARE that the customer is responsible for any and all damage to the boat or motor during the rental. This includes damage to the prop.
Charges for damage to prop ( We use stainless props. They are harder to damage but are also more expensive to replace):
Prop reconditioning: $150.00
Prop replacement: $350.00-$900.00
Can sand damage the prop?
YES! Sand and mud can do major damage to the prop.
REMEMBER: Do not start the engine if you are in shallow water. Use the paddle to push into deeper water. Never "beach" the boat. Anchor away from the shore keeping the boat in mid-thigh to waist deep water and wade to shore. Do not operate the boat outside of the marked channels.
FUEL AND ADDITIONAL COSTS
Is fuel included in the price?
No. All fuel charges are additional and are the customer's responsibility.
Can I fuel the boat myself?
No. Our boats run on non-ethanol fuel only. Boats may only be fueled by a Captiva Watersports employee at Tween Waters Marina to avoid any problems. Customers who fuel the boat themselves will be charged for damages. BE AWARE that the costs to clean fuel and lines if ethanol is used is $150-$300
How much fuel will I use?
Every rental is different. Passenger weight, weather, and how the boat is driven all impact fuel use.
Our boats are equipped with fuel efficient 4-stroke motors. We can give you an average after we know more about your group and where you are going.
What happens if I break something?
Customers are responsible for any and all damage to the boat, motor, or any equipment.
Your credit card will be charged for any damage and/or lost equipment immediately.
If the boat is damaged and requires fiberglass repair a $1500 authorization will be placed on the card as a deposit until a professional can be contacted.

Boats are due in 15 minutes before the end of the rental period for check-out and refueling.
Late fees are $100.00 per half hour! The first half hour starts 5 minutes after your scheduled return time. If you are running late please call and let us know.
